Student climate change concerns

Thursday, April 16, 2015

Students at Grand Rapids High School were asked about their concerns regarding climate change in the Grand Rapids area. Here are their responses:

-I am concerned about geese arriving later because if they keep arriving later then it would mess up the hunting season.

-I am concerned with the fish population because I fish all year round

-I’m concerned with the deer population because I like to hunt white tail deer

-I am concerned with the water getting gross and warm because I live on the lake and because the waters  getting warm it’s getting gross

-I am concerned about our tullibee population because they are a key part of the food chain in Minnesota lakes

-I am concerned with the yellow perch dying because they are the main source of food for pike and walleye

-I am concerned with the Bobcats population increasing because they eat stuff.

-I am concerned with migration patterns changing because extreme weather is killing major parts of species.

-I am concerned about if some habitats change we won’t have the same kind of animals.

-I’m concerned with Bobcats coming under north because a lot of dogs spend a lot of time outside.

-I am concerned with the tullibees because it would harm the fish ecosystem.

-I am concerned with the changing weather patterns because of its possible negative effects on business and tourism

-I am concerned with the blue gill’s population because blue gills are fun to catch in the summer.

-I am concerned with emerald ash borer because it is killing the ash trees.

-I am concerned with our farming industries because if our crops die from extreme weather, we will have to import food which is more expensive.

-I’m concerned with the water temperature changing because it could kill fish and ruin the food chain in our lakes

-I am concerned about over population because the climate change can event population

-I am concerned with Bobcats because of people’s small animals like cats or dogs. I am also concerned with the tree population because of the jobs like logging and the paper company’s in Grand Rapids.

-I am concerned with the increase in bobcats because they could kill the deer population.

-I am concerned that all the fishies will die

-I am concerned about flooding because we might not get the same tourism and people won’t want to come visit.

-I am concerned with the tree species changing because many animals depend upon the trees

-I’m concerned with the fish population decreasing because I enjoy using the lakes and they are kept clean by fish.

-I’m concerned for the migration of birds and their inability to adjust.

-I am concerned for the fact that what affects the animal system affects the plant system

-I’m concerned with the fish populations in warmer lakes because of the opportunities to have fun are dying along with the fish

-I am concerned for the wildlife and the game all around the state. Bird, fish, big game, etc. because if we don’t show care or concern for them we may not have them in later years.

-I am concerned with how other countries are not as worried about climate change because the only way to slow it down is to have everybody working together

-I’m concerned with fish because I want a future where I will be able to fish the same species as before.

-I am concerned with animals and how they will adapt and migrate.

-I’m concerned with the increase of Bobcats because they kill deer

-I am concerned about the trees because the lack of snow causes frost in their roots that are not allowing the trees to replenish themselves in spring

-I am concerned with the rising temperature because it has many negative effects on our ecosystems.

-I’m concerned about the geese because they’re here for less time and eventually may not be here at all.

-Concerned with Disease because it kills trees and animals and people

-I am concerned with the increasing amount of insects because more ticks with Lymes Disease have reproduced.

-I am concerned with the heating of the environment because it will kill off too many species of already very endangered species that will have a negative effect on the environment which could end up hurting us

-I am concerned about the walleye population because of less oxygen levels in deep water due to climate change

-I am concerned with tree loss because Blandin is a big business and loss of profit could effect Grand Rapids greatly

-I’m concerned about humans effecting climate change and the population growing because the more of us there are, the more there will be littering and stuff like that, which effects the air quality and could effect the temperature and cause global warming in the long run.

-I am concerned with global warming because it is causing lakes to warm up and making fish go to the top of the lake and die.

-I am concerned with the increasing number of bugs because they can have diseases and are gross

-I am concerned with the late migration patterns of birds because there won’t be any birds to hunt if they stop migrating due to the warming weather.

-I am concerned with bug population because they are killing trees and bringing more diseases to humans

-I am concerned with the algae bloom in lakes because it is really hard to swim in green, mucky water.

-I’m concerned about the variability of extreme temperatures because it kills off animals and plant species.

-I am concerned about early ice out because it will affect the population of fish

-I’m concerned for the fish population in the warmer lakes because you’re missing opportunities to have fun when the fish die

-I am concerned with wildlife populations  because of the extreme winters/summers and how that hurts the population growth and maintenance

-I am concerned about maple syrup business because our average winters are going out earlier each year so then the sap runs more slowly.

-I am concerned about the tree population because wood is an important resource that we depend on for building, paper, jobs, etc.

-I’m concerned about the tree population because of the lack of snow and deeper frost levels

-I’m concerned about the real estate business because of algae on lakes = not selling lake property and over population because of a warmer climate = not enough room plus more pollution.

-I’m concerned about turkeys attacking small dogs

-I am concerned about the cold water fish population because of the warmer water temperatures.

-I am concerned about cold water species like trout that will disappear when the water warms up

-I’m concerned about the Ash population with the emerald ash bore

-I am concerned about the walleye population due to warmer water temperatures that kill their prey.

-I am concerned about the Earth because it is changing in a way that effects us all. I love the animals and plants.

-I am concerned with the carbon and air pollution because then it will be hard to breathe.

-I am concerned about the algae growth because of the impact it will have on housing sales.

-I am concerned about the baby birds because they said that they are being born in the cold and snowy season.

-I am concerned with our lakes getting gross from algae growth.

-I am concerned about ticks because we could get limes disease

-I am concerned about the gray squirrels since they are an invasive species

-I am concerned about the water because if we get more algae our water will not be wanted. Our tourists will not always want to come back.

-I am concerned with the disappearing of trees in the area because of the increase in climate could make trees that exist in colder climates not be here in the coming years.

-I am concerned with the workforce in Grand Rapids because as tree species move, so will the Blandin paper company have to move, and with that the jobs at Blandin will move too.

-I am concerned with animal population because of changing weather.

-I am concerned with warming lakes because the walleyes will die off, but bass would be bigger so that would be good.

-I am concerned with our lakes because if they get warmer, certain species of fish can’t live in them and could die.

-I am concerned with trees because emerald ash borers are growing as a species as climate changes and warms, causing trees in northern Minnesota to be killed.

-I am concerned about trees because if they migrate north, then the lumber and paper companies will have to move their mills, and plants more north.

-I am concerned about our birds because some might start to leave due to climate change

-I am concerned with warming of water and fish dying out

-I am concerned with the disappearing of tree species in the area because of the increase in climate

-I am concerned about the different temperatures because some of the animals will not be able to adapt.

-I am concerned with our fish population because many people around here fish and it is one of our main income for Grand Rapids.

-I am concerned with the variability in our area because that will effect everything from our businesses to our woods.

-I am concerned with our forests because trees dry up when sunlight comes and we have had a 5 degree average temp increase.

-I am concerned with the fish population of species because of warmer water

-I am concerned with the cold water fish dying because of the heat and bigger fish being dependent on them to survive.

-I am concerned with pollution because of the growing population.

-I am concerned about the fish in cold water because they are losing oxygen

-I am concerned with animal species coming back from migration too early, or leaving too late, because they could be caught in the violent weather in Minnesota, which could severely harm the animal’s population

-I am concerned with the fish population because of “Global Warming” warming waters.

-I am concerned that men and women might get Lymes disease easier because the deer tick population is high.

-I am concerned with the tree species because of the lack of snow.

-I am concerned the growth of young trees due to the lack of snowfall protecting them from wild life.

-I am concerned about the animals disappearing because of the extreme variability of temperatures

-I am concerned with the safety and security of our country because the government is more concerned about climate change.

-I am concerned with the main supply of the food for gamefish because of the change of temperature.

-I am concerned with our animal species/population because of all the severe weather changes and they can not all adapt as well as others
